Celebrating Three Decades of Service: Liz Fothergill’s Journey with Citizens Advice

As we bid farewell to one of our most dedicated trustees, Liz Fothergill, we take a moment to reflect on her extraordinary journey and the lasting impact she has made on Citizens Advice and our community.

A Career Rooted in Compassion

Liz’s story with Citizens Advice began in 1993 when she joined Citizens Advice Taunton as a volunteer. Little did anyone know that this would be the start of a 30-year commitment to improving lives across Somerset.

Over the next 23 years, Liz’s dedication and capability saw her progress through various roles. From volunteer to welfare benefit caseworker, from deputy manager to Chief Officer, Liz experienced firsthand the challenges and rewards of every position within the charity.

Transforming Citizens Advice Taunton

As Chief Officer from 2005 to 2016, Liz was the driving force behind numerous initiatives that expanded and improved services:

  • Grew the paid staff from just 3 to a team of 28
  • Managed a volunteer force of over 100 dedicated individuals
  • Launched crucial projects including the Macmillan Service, Legal Aid commissioning, Pension Wise, and Financial Inclusion
  • Led the relocation from outdated offices to the spacious and well-equipped St Mary’s House in Magdalene Street

Under Liz’s leadership, Citizens Advice Taunton not only grew in size, but also in its capacity to serve the community effectively.

A New Chapter with Citizens Advice North Somerset

After retiring from her role in Taunton, Liz’s passion for the Citizens Advice mission led her to join our board at Citizens Advice North Somerset in November 2016. As a trustee, she has been invaluable in:

  • Chairing the Board of Trustees
  • Providing crucial support during revenue challenges
  • Guiding the organisation through the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns
  • Playing a key role in the negotiation and completion of the purchase of CANS offices at 39 Oxford Street.

A Legacy of Community Service

Liz’s commitment to improving lives extends beyond Citizens Advice. She has served as a trustee for Taunton Association for the Homeless for 8 years and Chair for Taunton Heritage Trust, an almshouse charity that provides housing and grants to those in need.

Farewell, But Not Goodbye

As Liz steps down from her role with us, we celebrate her incredible legacy. Her grounded approach, compassion, and visionary leadership have shaped not just our charity, but the entire landscape of advice services and community support in Somerset.

Liz, your dedication has touched countless lives, and your impact will continue to be felt for years to come. We thank you for your service, your wisdom, and your unwavering commitment to making our community a better place.

While this marks the end of a chapter, we know that Liz’s passion for helping others will continue to shine bright in whatever she chooses to do next. Thank you, Liz, for everything.
