Understanding the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD 2025)
Each area represents a Lower Layer Super Output Area (LSOA) – a small neighbourhood of around 1,500 people.
The IMD decile ranks each area from 1 (most deprived 10%) to
10 (least deprived 10%), based on seven domains:
- Income: low household income or reliance on benefits
- Employment: barriers to secure or well-paid work
- Education & Skills: low qualifications or poor attainment
- Health & Disability: illness or early mortality
- Crime: exposure to crime or antisocial behaviour
- Housing & Services: affordability, overcrowding, or distance to essentials
- Living Environment: housing quality and air quality
